Set an Intention Not A Resolution a gentle approach
As we step into a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the past and consider the changes we want to make in our lives for a better new year. You might be asking yourself “Did I honour the self-care practices that I had wanted to commit to.? “Did I find more time for me? “Did I react less, and not get carried away by the chaos and emotional turmoil? We might find ourselves answering “not really” or “somewhat” to one or more of these questions. Everyday life can seem to get in the way of the most important intentions we have for ourselves. For many families affected by a loved one’s addiction, this time can bring a mix of hope and anxiety. Instead of setting rigid resolutions that may feel overwhelming, we invite you to embrace a gentler approach: setting intentions.
Why Intentions Over Resolutions?
Resolutions often come with expectations and pressures that can be hard to bear, especially when you’re navigating the emotional landscape of loss and healing. They can lead to feelings of failure if we don’t achieve them, reinforcing old habits and negative self-talk. By choosing intentions, we shift our focus from doing to being. This year, consider viewing your journey as a practice, allowing yourself the grace to grow without the weight of strict parameters.
The Importance of Self-Compassion
For families grappling with grief, emotional healing is paramount. Your nervous system may be in a state of deregulation, constantly on high alert. It’s crucial to acknowledge that making healthy changes is much harder when you are not at ease. This year, the most important thing might be giving yourself the space and rest you need. Kindness to yourself isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity for healing.
The Power of Intentions
Amy Noelle, our Certified Mindfulness and Self Compassion Coach, offers a refreshing perspective on how to cultivate healthy, sustainable habits through small changes over time. Here are her three steps for setting intentions that can guide you when setting your intentions for 2025:
and foremost, understand that setbacks are a natural part of any journey. It’s important to recognize that you’re not alone in this. Everyone experiences challenges, especially when trying to make significant changes. When a setback occurs, acknowledge it and move on to the next step.
Step 2. Don’t Judge
Next, practice non-judgment. If you find yourself wandering from your intention, simply notice it without harsh criticism. It’s common to have thoughts like, “What was I thinking?” or “I can’t do this.” Instead of letting these judgments consume you, gently acknowledge them, and allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling without shame.
Step 3. Refocus
Finally, refocus your energy. Bring yourself back to your initial intention, allowing for any necessary revisions. Life is not linear, and it’s okay to adjust your path as you go. Give yourself permission to start again, time and time again, as many times as you need.
A Journey of Small Changes
As you move through the year, remember that small changes lead to lasting habits. Celebrate the journey, appreciate each step, and let go of the need for perfection. By focusing on intentions rather than resolutions, you can create a more compassionate relationship with yourself and your goals.
The best way to cultivate healthy sustainable habits is through a series of small changes over time.
