Happiness Starts with Noticing

Many of us spend our days solving problems, meeting responsibilities, and focusing on what still needs attention. It’s understandable because our brains are wired to scan for potential threats and challenges. And when you are affected by someone else’s addiction, searching for the next drama or danger is very real. We can become stuck on high alert, constantly looking out for what might happen next.

When we’re living this way, our attention becomes trained to notice what’s wrong, what’s missing, or what could go wrong. Over time, we can lose sight of the moments that bring comfort, connection, beauty, or ease.

Cultivating happiness doesn’t mean ignoring life’s difficulties or pretending everything is okay. It means gently widening our attention so that we can notice the good as well as the hard.

Often, happiness isn’t found in dramatic life changes. It begins in small moments that we might otherwise overlook:

  • The warmth of your morning tea.
  • A bird singing outside your window.
  • A message from a friend.
  • A moment when your shoulders relax.

These moments may seem small, but they matter. Research shows that intentionally noticing positive experiences can improve wellbeing over time.

This week, try pausing once a day and asking yourself:

What is good right now?

Not perfect. Not amazing. Just good.

You might be surprised by what you discover.

This Week’s Self-care Invitation

Write down one good thing you notice each day.

It doesn’t have to be big. Perhaps it’s the warmth of the sun on your face, a kind conversation, a moment of peace, or simply getting through a difficult day.

Over time, these small moments can help us remember that goodness exists alongside life’s challenges.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

In the Blossome Community, we know that self-care can feel difficult when you’re carrying stress, grief, worry, or the impact of a loved one’s substance use. That’s why we create gentle opportunities to practise together.

Whether you join us for a Resourcing Me session in person or online , slow stitching, a sunrise dip, or another self-care activity, you’ll find a warm and welcoming community that understands.

Sometimes happiness begins with noticing what’s already good. Sometimes it begins with knowing you’re not alone. If you’d like support on your self-care journey, we’d love to welcome you to one of our upcoming activities or into the Blossome Community.

Take a look at our upcoming events or get in touch to find out more. We’re here when you’re ready, and when you are not (we never really feel ready.)
