Finding Your voice. A gentle singing session to reconnect with your voice

Many in our community live in silence, silenced by addiction at home, silenced by fear, silenced by shame. Finding your voice again can feel impossible. This singing session is a chance to gently break that silence, without pressure, without performance, without judgment.

Through simple, mindful songs, will the supportive guidance of Kate, you’ll discover the healing power of your own voice. Singing together helps us breathe deeper, release emotions and tension, and remember that we are not alone. There may also be laughter and joy, definitely some inner smiles.

Do not worry about how you sound – no one else will care what you sound like – this is a space to find your voice – singing connects deeply to your primitive self and can help release emotions.

Why Singing is Especially Healing for Families Affected by Addiction

Addiction impacts not only the person struggling but also the people who love them. The ongoing stress, emotional tension, and silent grief can take a toll on your body and mind. Many of us hold it all inside, in silence. Singing can help.

This isn’t about standing up and performing. It’s about coming together, side by side, to share sound in a safe, supportive space.

  • No experience needed.  If you can hum, you can join in.
  • Taught by ear,  no need to read music.
  • Simple, soothing songs,  easy to learn, calming to sing.
  • Grounded in wellbeing, supporting body, mind and soul.

By singing together, we:

  • Connect with others through shared voices.
  • Breathe more deeply, releasing stress and tension.
  • Learn something new that stimulates the mind.
  • Give & receive support through community.
  • Take notice of the moment, finding peace and calm.

What to Expect

  • A warm, welcoming space (no prior singing experience needed)
  • A guided practice focused on deep relaxation and emotional support
  • Simple, gentle stretches and restorative postures to release tension
  • Time for guided meditation and mindful breathing
  • An opportunity to reconnect with yourself in a compassionate, judgment-free environment

This activity is open to anyone wanting to experience the benefits of Restorative Yoga, in a safe, supportive community space.

Facilitator

Meet Kate Pavey,  a musician, singer, teacher and psychodynamic psychotherapist. Kate has been leading Mindful Singing Retreats and Singing Mamas Colchester, guiding groups to reconnect with themselves and with each other through voice.

Her sessions are for anyone, especially those who have never sung in public before. With kindness and sensitivity, Kate creates a nourishing space where singing becomes less about performance and more about healing.

“I believe everyone has a voice. My role is to help you find yours, gently, mindfully, and in connection with others.” – Kate

Q & A about this Singing Session

Not at all. This session isn’t about being in tune. It’s about finding joy and release in using your voice. Humming, listening, or singing quietly are all welcome.

The singing session takes place at The Headgate Theatre, Colchester. You can see the full location on the map below.

The session lasts for 90 minutes. We will only be singing for 60 minutes, so there is time before the end of the session to connect with others and ask questions, so you get the most from this wonderful experience. Refreshments will be provided.

The session is suited to anyone who has been bereaved or affected by someone else’s alcoholism or addiction. It will enable you  to explore emotions that come up in a safe supportive environment. No singing experience is necessary.

You won’t be the only nervous one. I’m sure almost all of us will feel nervous. That’s completely normal.  You’ll be gently supported and never asked to sing solo, unless you want to. Simply being present is enough.
