Alcohol Awareness Week: Families Affected By Addiction Face a Lack of Support

This Alcohol Awareness Week (7-11th July) Colchester based addiction support organisation Blossome is highlighting the lack of support for families affected by or bereaved by a loved one’s alcohol addiction.

Despite nearly five million people in the UK being negatively affected by someone else’s drinking or drug use, only 1.58% of addiction recovery funding supports families.*

Blossome wants anyone who has been affected by someone’s substance abuse in any way to know that support is available from Blossome. The Community Interest Company (CIC) is holding a series of events throughout the week to encourage people to take some time for themselves, and actively participate in their own self care so that they can heal.

Blossome founder, Kim Moore said: “I know first hand the impact that living with active alcoholism in the home can have on your life. My husband’s addiction cost us our marriage and his life. My kids lost their dad. I lost me.

That is why I started the Blossome community, to help other people in the same situation learn Mindful Self-Compassion and encourage them to take some time to support themselves in the same way they would a friend. Self-compassion eases suffering. It’s the anti-dote to shame, and a proven way to overcome codependency.

I know it feels so hard to find the time and space to reach out for support and that’s why at Blossome we offer a range of activities from online drop-in sessions that are less than an hour, to whole days by the beach – to learn how to regulate and express emotions.

I hope anyone that needs us can find the time and courage to take that first step in reaching out for support. We will even help you take the first step.”

Activities across Alcohol Awareness Week include:

7th July – An evening at the beach hut.

A ticketed event for at The Red Beach Hut based in Southcliff, Walton-on-the-Naze, that will include dinner and a Qigong session on the beach.

10th July – 7-7.45pm – Virtual Resourcing Me – Mindful Self Compassion Session.

This is an opportunity for people both in and new to the community to learn new techniques and practice self-compassion in a monthly live online gathering. The session offers an introduction to the practice of self-compassion, helping attendees to learn how to give the same support and kindness that they would give to a good friend. Led by Amy Noelle, Certified Mindful Self-compassion Teacher and Blossome founder and Mindful Self Compassion teacher in Training, Kim Moore.

12th July – 9am – 6pm, drop in. Beach Hut Day – A day of self care by the sea.

This free-to-attend day is held at The Red Beach Hut based in Southcliff, Walton-on-the-Naze and aims to give attendees the tools to embark on a journey of self-care. The day will include a range of self-care activities including a sea glass walk, art and expressive writing. All activities have been trauma informed and are designed to help participants learn easy ways to ease their emotions when life feels hard.

Blossome’s services aim to empower people to go inwards, create inner peace, be kinder to themselves, have a choice in life, and gain confidence in themselves even when chaos is happening around them.
